The SML Story, From a Factory Floor in Austria to the World Stage

Humble Beginnings, Big Vision

There’s a particular kind of confidence that only comes from decades of getting things right. Walk through a modern packaging plant, a carpet manufacturing facility, or a food grade barrier film factory anywhere in the world, and there’s a good chance the machinery humming at the heart of it was built by a company most people outside the industry have heard of SML Maschinengesellschaft mbH, quietly headquartered in Redlham, a small town at the edge of Austria’s scenic Salzkammergut region.

The Independence That Changed Everything

The company’s origins trace back to 1967, when it began as a business unit of Lenzing AG, Austria’s well known fibre manufacturer. It wasn’t until 1995 that the company truly found its footing breaking away to become a 100 percent family owned operation, three letters that would eventually come to mean something significant in global manufacturing circles.

A Streak of World Firsts

The milestones came fast, In 1997, a revolutionary horizontal sliding winder the W2000 changed how the industry thought about winding technology. A year later, the Austrofil line rewrote the rules for multifilament spinning. By 2009, SML became the first company in the world to demonstrate a stretch film line running at 1,000 metres per minute. In 2015, they unveiled the MasterCast, the world’s largest stretch film line. And in 2019, they moved into a brand new headquarters, purpose built and future ready.

The Man Behind the Mission

At the centre of all this has been Karl Stöger, the CEO who has shaped this company identity as a technology company first, and a machinery company second. In his own words “At SML, we are believers in quality, innovation and efficiency, along with the sustainable success of our customers. High performance does not end when a line is first put into operation it accompanies our customers throughout the line’s life span.” That philosophy treating every machine as the beginning of a long relationship rather than the end of a transaction has made this company the kind of partner major global manufacturers come back to, again and again.

What SML Actually Makes

So what exactly does SML make? The range is broader than most would expect. Cast film lines for stretch wrap film sold under names like MiniCast, SmartCast, and the flagship MasterCast sit alongside sheet lines for PET and thermoforming, coating and laminating systems for flexible packaging, and the Austrofil spinning lines for technical textiles and carpet fibre. Then there’s their winding technology, engineered to handle everything from hygiene film to barrier coatings. The machinery is now running in more than 100 countries, serving some of the biggest names in plastics, packaging, and technical textiles.

Where You’ll Find SML in the Real World

The industries that rely on SML read like a map of modern manufacturing food packaging, medical barrier film, hygiene products, carpet and flooring, lithium battery separators, aseptic carton coating. If a material needs to be extruded, coated, laminated, or wound at scale and with precision.

A Conversation Worth Having
On the sidelines of Plast Milan 2026, Mr. Ginu Joseph, Editor in Chief of Modern Plastics India and Vice President of the Global Plastics Association, sat down with Mr. Christian Malzner, Area Sales Manager at SML. It was the kind of conversation that cuts through the noise of a busy trade floor two industry insiders talking candidly about where extrusion technology is heading, what customers are really asking for, and how the company continues to stay ahead of the curve. Mr. Malzner’s deep product knowledge and clear eyed view of the market left a strong impression, reflecting exactly the kind of people the organisation puts forward to represent its brand informed, approachable, and genuinely invested in their customers’ success.

Stealing the Show in Milan

This June, the industry got another look at what rhis company can do. At Plast 2026 in Milan, this company brought its MiniCast line to the show floor running it live, twice daily, in collaboration with DOW, producing 100 percent polyethylene films that are fully recyclable. The demonstrations also included the production of coreless machine rolls for high-speed wrappers a feature that shows just how seamlessly operators can switch between production formats. In an era when sustainability targets are reshaping procurement decisions across every sector, showing recyclable output in real time is not just a technical flex it’s a statement of intent.

Why SML Deserves a Serious Look

For anyone evaluating extrusion technology, the case for this organisation is straightforward. The company has spent decades building manufacturing and design expertise, with a proven track record of delivering on agreed timelines, costs, and performance benchmarks. Add to that an in-house Technology Centre with six full-scale demonstration lines for customer trials, and you have something rare in industrial machinery a partner willing to prove its claims before you commit. In a market where downtime costs real money and substandard output has real consequences, this isn’t just building machines it’s building the infrastructure that makes modern packaging safer, textiles stronger, and manufacturing more efficient.
