JRD Polymers: Connecting Materials, Technology and Opportunities

Can you share something about JRD Polymers and its association with the Indian Plastic Industry?

JRD Polymers has been associated with the plastics and chemical industry, with a focus on distribution, technical support, and building long-term relationships between global material manufacturers and customers in India.

Our role is not limited to supplying a material. We try to understand the customer’s application, processing requirements, and challenges, and then connect them with the right material and technical solution. Over the years, this approach has helped us build strong relationships across the value chain.

The Indian plastics industry has also evolved tremendously. From being largely focused on conventional commodity polymers, it has moved towards engineering plastics, speciality materials, high-performance polymers, and application-specific solutions. JRD Polymers has grown along with this transformation.

Since you took over the company, what changes and challenges have you seen in the Indian Plastics Industry?

The biggest change has been the professionalisation of the industry. Customers today are much more informed and technically demanding. They don’t simply look at the price of a polymer; they look at performance, consistency, productivity, sustainability, and total cost of ownership.

We have also seen rapid growth in sectors such as automotive, electrical and electronics, appliances, healthcare, infrastructure, packaging, and consumer products. These industries are demanding materials with better performance and greater consistency.

At the same time, the industry has faced challenges such as raw-material price volatility, global supply-chain disruptions, currency fluctuations, and increasing environmental regulations. For a distributor, managing inventory and ensuring uninterrupted supply while maintaining competitive pricing is a continuous challenge.

But I look at challenges as opportunities. They force us to become more efficient and, importantly, to add greater value for our customers.

What kind of growth have you seen in terms of new materials in the plastic industry?

There has been significant growth in specialty and engineering polymers. Indian processors are increasingly looking for materials that can replace traditional materials or metals while providing better performance, lighter weight, durability, and design flexibility.

We are seeing interest in materials for applications requiring heat resistance, chemical resistance, dimensional stability, flame retardancy, electrical performance, and high mechanical strength.

Another important development is the movement towards more sustainable materials. Recycled polymers, bio-based materials, and polymers designed for improved recyclability are becoming increasingly relevant.

In which materials does JRD have expertise?

Our expertise is primarily in speciality and engineering polymer solutions, where material selection and technical understanding are important.

We work with customers across different applications and help them identify suitable materials based on performance requirements, processing conditions, and end-use specifications.

Our strength is really in understanding the application and connecting customers with the appropriate material technology through our principals.

You are a distributor for the chemical sector also, but how is the plastic (polymer) sector helping the growth of your company?

The polymer business has become an important part of our overall growth because plastics today touch almost every major industrial sector.

What makes polymers particularly interesting is the diversity of applications. Automotive, electrical and electronics, appliances, medical products, packaging, and industrial components all require different material solutions.

Our chemical and polymer businesses also complement each other in terms of customer relationships and industry knowledge. However, polymers require a more application-oriented approach, and that has encouraged us to strengthen our technical capabilities.

Recycling is the latest topic in discussion for the plastic sector. Is your company involved in distributing recycled material?

Recycling is no longer something the industry can treat as an optional subject. It is becoming an integral part of the future of plastics.

We are involved in distributing repurposed materials, and we are also closely following developments in circular materials. There is increasing demand from brand owners and processors for more sustainable solutions.

However, repurposed material has to meet the required technical and quality standards. For engineering applications in particular, consistency, traceability, and performance are extremely important.

I believe the future will involve improved product design, greater use of repurposed materials, and the development of technologies that support a more circular plastics industry. Distributors can play an important role by bringing these technologies and materials closer to Indian customers.

How do you see the growth of the Indian plastics industry?

I am very positive about the long-term prospects of the Indian plastics industry.

India has a large domestic market, a growing manufacturing base, and increasing demand from sectors such as automotive, electronics, healthcare, infrastructure, packaging, and consumer goods. The government’s focus on manufacturing and the development of domestic supply chains can also create new opportunities.

Another important factor is India’s potential to become a global manufacturing hub. If we can improve technology, quality, productivity, and sustainability, Indian processors can compete much more strongly in international markets.

Worldwide, you might have noticed companies trying to depend less on fossil fuels (petrochemicals) and developing new products through plant-based materials (biopolymers). What are your thoughts on this subject?

I think this is an important and necessary direction for the industry, but it needs to be approached realistically.

Petrochemical-based polymers will continue to play an important role for many years because they provide an excellent combination of performance, scalability, and cost. At the same time, we cannot ignore the environmental challenges associated with fossil-based materials.

Bio-based polymers, recycled polymers, and other alternative technologies have an important role to play. But their success will ultimately depend on performance, availability, economics, end-of-life solutions, and the overall environmental impact.

Would you like to share your thoughts on the upcoming generation who plan to get into distribution in the polymer sector?

My biggest advice would be: don’t look at distribution as simply buying and selling a product.

The successful distributor of the future will need to understand materials, applications, processing technology, customers, and global trends. Technical knowledge will become increasingly important.

The younger generation should also focus on building relationships and maintaining integrity. This is a relationship-driven industry, and reputation takes years to build but can be lost very quickly.

Finally, keep learning. The polymer industry is changing rapidly—with engineering plastics, recycling, biopolymers, lightweighting, electrification, and new processing technologies. Those who continuously learn and adapt will have tremendous opportunities.
